I was raised in small town USA in rural West Tennessee; an only child brought up with a love for agriculture. My family raised sheep and Australian Shepherds all through my childhood, and I was very involved with the county 4-H and eventually my high school FFA chapter. I held offices, went to conventions, showed sheep, competed in public speaking contests and quiz bowls, and was well educated in Robert’s Rules of Order. I worked three of my four years of high school towards pursuing an agriculture education degree from Mississippi State University when a trip to UT Knoxville in 2012 changed my perspective on learning. A professor at the school brought up a pretty good point: attending an out of state college for an education degree in the hopes of coming back to my home state was almost pointless. I didn’t want to go to any other school but MSU, so the hunt for a major was on. My high school ag was livestock based learning with no plant program, but my grandparents had always let me help them in their gardens; floral and vegetative. Mississippi State offers a four year program in the plant and soil science department to study horticulture with a focus on floral management; that is, I could one day pursue a career in design, or shop management, or even wholesale. I knew immediately that this was the ideal major for me, and I have loved every minute of it (except chemistry 1 & 2 freshman year). I am currently a junior getting a BS in horticulture that covers science, business, and art.
I am a member of Zeta Tau Alpha fraternity where I’ve met my best friends from all across the country. This past fall I got the opportunity to serve the entire Panhellenic community as a Gamma Chi recruitment counselor during formal recruitment. I am the current president for the MSU chapter of SAIFD (Student chapter for the American Institute of Floral Designers) and have represented the chapter at the regional and national AIFD conventions and student design contests. Myself (the cactus in the middle) and my fellow officers are pictured above from our latest chapter induction ceremony. I am also a member of the MSU Collegiate FFA, and sang in the University Women’s and mixed chorales my freshman and sophomore years. Classic rock has a special place in my heart (I’m sure you saw my LZ quote on my home page). I really love reading books, mostly Harry Potter or To Kill a Mocking Bird or anything else that I’ve already read five times. I can binge watch entire seasons of shows in a day that took tv crews a year to produce, and I should probably be majoring in napping and not horticulture.
